The Different Types of Wall Insulation Explained
Without wall insulation, the home will be much more difficult to temperature control and new owners will not be pleased with how much it costs to run their air conditioner every summer.
Read on to learn about the different types of wall insulation and which one is right for your new construction.
Wall Batts
This insulation is traditionally made with fiberglass. However, there are newer versions made of cotton, sheep or mineral wool, or plastic. These come in either rolls or batts.
Because of this, they come in the standard size of the width between two studs. This makes it ideal for unfinished spaces, so it's one of the preferred types by many builders. It is also one of the least expensive types of insulation.
When you purchase rolls, they may need to be cut in order to fit length-wise into your space. If you force it into a small space, this will reduce its efficiency. If installed correctly, high-quality blanket insulation can have up to a 4.3 R-value.
You should also be careful when installing this type of insulation. Fiberglass is a skin and lung irritant, so you should be wearing protective clothing and gloves while handling this material. You should especially be careful to keep it out of your eyes during installation.
